Introduction
WordPress is the most popular content management systems (CMS) in the world, powering millions of websites ranging from personal blogs to large business platforms. Over the years, WordPress has continuously evolved by introducing new features, improvements, and technological innovations that help users build and manage websites more efficiently. Each major version is set to be in line with the WordPress roadmap and brings enhancements that improve performance, usability, design flexibility, and developer capabilities.
WordPress traditionally featured three major releases each year but development stalled in 2025 due to ongoing legal disputes when only 2 major versions were released. Initially the plan was to release only one new version in 2026 but current planning has restored the three major releases per year timeline.
Update: The release of WordPress 7.0 was initially scheduled for 9 April 2026 but its release was postponed by a few weeks due to more time needed to fully integrate real-time collaboration in the Block Editor. Real-time collaboration is a long awaited feature that allows multiple editors to edit the same content simultaneously. Real-time collaboration has been part of the WordPress roadmap for many years and is refered to as “the holy grail” of Phase 3 of the Gutenberg project, with Phase 4 being native Multilanguage feature. However, on 8 May 2026, a tough decision was made by the project Lead Matt Mullenweg to exclude the release from core until it becomes stable for shipping. The release date of WordPress 7.0 was announced for 20 May 2026.
As the version number suggests, it is not an ordinary release or just another major version. This time the core contributors have made sure that it contains many long-awaited improvements and it feels like an important milestone has finally been achieved. The new version introduces many new tools and improvements that aim to make website creation easier, faster, and more collaborative. Some of the key changes include a completely modernized admin panel interface, enhancing design customization options, new Gutenberg blocks and new AI capabilities.
Improved Admin Dashboard Interface
WordPress 7.0 also introduces improvements to the administrative dashboard. The WordPress dashboard, commonly referred to as the “admin panel,” is the control center where website owners manage content, themes, plugins, and settings.
In this update, the interface receives a brand new design with a modern look and feel focused on clarity and usability. The update uses a system called DataViews, which replaces traditional WP List Tables with a more modern app-like interface. The layout changes include improved spacing, cleaner typography, and more consistent visual elements. These design changes aim to align WordPress with modern web standards and are designed to make the interface easier to navigate for new users.
Post revisions have also been redesigned. Previously revisions were displayed primarily as text differences, which could be difficult to understand. WordPress 7.0 allows users to visually compare previous versions of posts or pages. This makes it easier to review edits and restore earlier versions when necessary.
The update also introduces smoother page transitions within the dashboard. Navigating between different sections of the admin panel now feels faster and more responsive. These changes improve the overall user experience while maintaining the familiar structure that long-time WordPress users recognize.
Enhanced Design and Customization Features
WordPress has become increasingly popular as a website builder because of its design flexibility. WordPress 7.0 continues to expand these capabilities by introducing several new customization tools.
Responsive layouts
One key improvement and a long-awaited feature request is the responsive editing support. Modern websites must display correctly on different screen sizes, including smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. WordPress 7.0 allows users to control how certain blocks appear on different devices.
For example, website designers can now choose to hide specific blocks on mobile devices or adjust layouts for smaller screens. This feature allows users to create more responsive and mobile-friendly websites without needing advanced coding skills.
Improved Block Pattern Editing
WordPress 7.0 also enhances pattern editing. Patterns are reusable design sections that can be inserted into pages and posts. Examples include headers, testimonials, call-to-action sections, and pricing tables. With the new editing improvements, users can modify patterns more easily and isolate specific sections for editing.
Custom CSS for Individual Block Instances
WordPress 7.0 also lets you add custom CSS directly to a specific block, right from the post or site editor. Previously, applying styles to just one block required extra steps and was not obvious to beginner users. For this a new customCSS block support is registered, which adds a Custom CSS field in the block’s Advanced panel. You only need to write the CSS rules themselves—no selectors are required.
Additional Layout Controls
The update introduces additional layout controls, such as text indentation options, improved column layouts, and better control over image aspect ratios. These tools help designers create more visually appealing pages while maintaining consistency across different parts of the website.
New Gutenberg Blocks and Block Enhancements
The block editor remains one of the most important components of WordPress. Since the realease of WordPress 5, platform development was focused on improving the Block Editor experience in WordPress and WordPress 7.0 continues with this ongoing attempt, as it expands the block system by introducing new core blocks to the Gutenberg Editor and improving existing ones. Among the new enhancements are
Breadcrumbs block
One new addition is the Breadcrumbs block. Breadcrumb navigation displays a trail that shows the user’s location within the website structure. For example, a breadcrumb might display a path such as Home > Blog > Article Title. This improves navigation and helps users understand the organization of the website.
Icons block
Another new feature is the Icons block. This block allows users to easily insert icons into their content without using external libraries or custom code. Icons are useful for highlighting features, creating visual lists, or adding decorative elements to pages.
Existing Blocks Improvements
The Grid block also receives significant improvements. It now supports responsive layouts that automatically adjust based on screen size. This allows users to create flexible multi-column designs without relying on complicated layout plugins or custom CSS.
Additionally, the Cover block now supports video backgrounds. This feature allows website creators to design visually engaging hero sections with moving background videos.
The Gallery block also includes a built-in lightbox feature. When visitors click on an image in a gallery, the image can open in a larger overlay view. This enhances the user experience and makes image galleries more interactive.
The Navigation block is also updated. It essentially makes it easier to create menus by reducing the number of steps required to create, edit, and organize links. It offers a more stable and predictable editing experience, minimizing issues when modifying complex menus.
These block improvements expand the creative possibilities available within the WordPress editor.
Improved Font Library Management
Typography plays a major role in web design, and WordPress 7.0 introduces improvements to font management through the expanded Font Library system.
In previous versions, font management was primarily available for block-based themes. WordPress 7.0 extends this functionality to classic themes as well. This means that users can upload and manage custom fonts directly from the WordPress dashboard regardless of the type of theme they use.
The new Fonts management page allows users to upload font files, organize font families, activate or deactivate fonts, and apply them to different elements of their website.
Once a font is added to the library, it becomes available in the block editor’s typography settings. This allows designers to easily apply custom fonts to headings, paragraphs, buttons, and other page elements.
This unified font management system simplifies the process of maintaining consistent typography across a website.
Client-Side Media Processing
WordPress 7.0 introduces improvements to how images and media files are handled. One of the most notable updates is client-side media processing.
Traditionally, images uploaded to WordPress are processed by the web server. This includes tasks such as resizing images, generating thumbnails, and compressing files. In WordPress 7.0, some of these tasks can now be performed directly in the user’s browser before the file is uploaded.
This approach reduces the workload on the server and improves upload performance. It also allows WordPress to support modern image formats and more advanced compression techniques.
Client-side media processing benefits both website owners and hosting providers. Faster media uploads improve the workflow for content creators, while reduced server processing helps improve overall website performance.
Artificial Intelligence Integration
Another forward-looking feature introduced in WordPress 7.0 is the integration of artificial intelligence tools. WordPress now includes a standardized AI client architecture that allows plugins and themes to connect with AI services more easily.
This system provides a foundation for AI-powered features such as automated content suggestions, image generation, chatbots, and SEO recommendations.
WP AI Client
The WP AI client is a new provider-agnostic API in WordPress 7.0 that offers plugins and themes a unified, standardized interface for interacting with AI models. It ships without any built-in AI providers, and no AI requests are executed by default.
Abilities API enhancements:
The Abilities API were introduced in WordPress 6.9 and provide a standardised way for plugins and themes to describe what they can do in a standardized way, so that users can use AI automation tools more easily. The abilities are meant to be used by AI agents to understand what features are available on the website and how to interact properly between those.
WordPress 7.0 introduces hybrid abilities, client-side filtering and search, a refined command palette, and a new Abilities Explorer screen in the admin area.
These updates help maintain WordPress as a reliable and modern platform for web development. Additional developer improvements include enhanced APIs, improved data management tools, and expanded support for dynamic content within blocks. The integration of AI technology reflects the growing importance of automation and intelligent tools in modern web development.
Developer Tools and Technical Improvements
WordPress 7.0 also introduces several improvements aimed at developers. These updates provide new tools and APIs that make it easier to build custom themes, plugins, and blocks.
Bumping Minimum PHP Version to 7.4
One key detail is bumping the minimum php version to 7.4. Websites that are running on lower php version will not be able to upgrade. It is highly recommended to upgrade your server’s php version to php 8.2 or higher.
PHP-only Block Registration
One important improvement is the ability to register blocks using PHP only. Previously, creating custom blocks often required JavaScript frameworks and complex development environments. WordPress 7.0 simplifies this process by allowing developers to create blocks using traditional PHP methods.
Iframing the Block Editor
In WordPress 7.0, the post editor is planned to always work as an iframe, regardless of the apiVersion of registered blocks. This is to ensure that global styles do not leak into the Block Editor. If you have custom Gutenberg blocks on your site that are registered with apiVersion < 3, you need to update them to apiVersion 3 and test if they still work properly. To help with this migration WordPress 6.9 already introduced warnings in the browser console.
WordPress 7.0 represents a major step forward in the evolution of the platform. The update introduces a wide range of new features and improvements designed to enhance collaboration, design flexibility, performance, and developer productivity.
The refreshed dashboard interface and visual revision tools make content management easier and more intuitive.
Designers benefit from improved customization tools, responsive editing capabilities, and expanded block features. The addition of new blocks, such as Breadcrumbs and Icons, further expands the possibilities for creative page design.
Improvements to font management and media processing enhance both performance and visual consistency. At the same time, the introduction of artificial intelligence integration and new developer APIs prepares WordPress for the future of web technology.
By combining modern features with its traditional strengths of flexibility and open-source development, WordPress 7.0 continues to strengthen its position as one of the most powerful and widely used content management systems in the world.
